Use Safety in Numbers to Elevate Yourself and Your Practice

by Certified Coach Alissa Gauger, MBA

Many of you harbor a secret fear that you, alone, feel too much fear and anxiety. You worry about your practice, your family and if you will be okay. Take a deep breath right in this moment, knowing that all of these private thoughts and feelings are something very universal and very much human.

As a coach who listens to people's deepest concerns every day, I have observed that most people think that they are probably "the craziest" or the "most messed up." They do not have the coach's perspective of actively listening to thousands of awe-inspiring people as they privately share their vulnerabilities. Most people fear that they must be the only one to worry so much, to feel so tired and worn out sometimes. For this reason, I treasure something that most Northwestern Mutual Financial Representatives (FRs) are not usually terribly interested in: group coaching.

I can hear you groan already! Stay with me...you crave the sacred connection of one coach holding space for you and providing you with the deep listening and feedback you need to get out of your own way. There is nothing that can replace that significance, I agree.

But can I ask you to consider something: that there is safety and comfort in numbers; that there is relief in knowing that your fears are shared by nearly everyone; and that you can change by witnessing another person be coached. It is natural to feel wary of group coaching. Sharing your thoughts, beliefs and accessing help in front of other people may be uncomfortable at times. At the same time, it might be the most courageous, bravest thing you have ever done that helps you access a whole new level of yourself.

If you or someone you mentor or care about needs coaching, but cannot afford it or would like to experience the power of the group setting, we have a new program launching in 2016. We deeply care about helping FRs overcome the most common obstacles in the business: phoning, prospecting and mental head trash. Stay tuned to learn more about how you can form your own private group of Northwestern FRs dedicated to improving themselves and changing clients' lives by diving deep.
