Are You In It For the Race Or For the Journey?

by Guest Blogger Karl Dettmann, Northwestern Mutual

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together," is an African proverb that I've been thinking about this week. For me, this is what Annual Meeting is all about.

Getting home is another matter, though, right?! Suddenly, I felt like I was at the end of a race and I needed to get right back up and start running again. I wondered if I can hit my next goal, which is even higher than last year. That's when I reminded myself of my team. I never have to go it alone. I am encircled with my family, a supportive staff, mentors, coaches, my brother Karl who is another FR and my colleagues. There is help in every direction if we are willing to accept it.

Alissa Gauger has been one of those people it took me a little while to ask for help, but it has been one of the best things I have done for myself. She has had such a huge impact in my life. I remember starting coaching simply on faith as I thought it was who ha eee. Proof is in the pudding baby! It's in the pudding. It turns out that it WORKS. I can look at my activity and see it has taken me to new levels. I feel happier and can enjoy my life even more. My family gets to see more of me. I have accountability and someone who can remind me to rest sometimes. Alissa has also taught me to break my goals down much smaller so that I feel successful most of the time. And I hit them.

Alissa was at Annual Meeting cheering me and my brother on while we walked the stage. I saw her and so many people who have supported me out in the audience. When I looked around the Bradley Center last week at all of the faces of people on the same journey it felt like we're definitely going far together.
